The static then consumes you was the top-prize winning work at the 2017 GVSU New Music Ensemble Composition Competition. The competition solicits 60-second works from GVSU composers responding to artwork from a particular gallery showing. In 2017, we responded to a work titled Comfortably Numb, created by GVSU Artist-in-Residence Nayda Collazo-Llorens.
The work explores the ways in which we engage with fragmented, overwhelming media via a wall of identically-sized, colorful, and often graphic magazine clippings and text. My piece first alludes to the many pop references in the clips, and to the cheery aura that the work exudes from afar, but the upbeat groove is interrupted by the ‘noise’ that one perceives when viewing the work closely.
